Apparently I am not good at blogging!

Well, it only takes me several months to update this news page.... not because I have no news but because it's just not part of my routine. Anyway, lots has happened since January.

The Vancouver Island Fiddle Camp was fantastic and after spending three days teaching and playing alongside Gordon, Patti, Zav, Alex, Miriam, Geoff and Lesley I definitely experienced a bit of withdrawal. Plans are already underway for 2011. Check out web.me.com/nanaimofiddlers for updates as they become available.

During the month of March I was involved in several performances with Geoff Horrocks and Patti Lamoureux. Such fun to play with these incredible musicians ..... hopefully there will be many more shows for us in the future!

As we move into May I will be adjudicating fiddle and strings classes at music festivals in Campbell River and Sechelt. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing a lot of wonderful young students in these two communities.

The teaching year is winding down again for me, which signals the beginning of the busy summer camp season. This year I'll be at 5 camps (Gavin Lake fell through this year, which is a big disappointment) including Whitehorse, Hay River, Fiddleworks on Salt Spring Island, and Castlegar.

Perhaps more exciting is the imminent release of some fabulous new fiddle books put together by Geoff Horrocks and myself. The first and second volumes will be available for purchase this summer. Once we have them in hand I will post purchasing information here on the site.

So, check out my calendar and see if I'll be teaching at a fiddle camp near you this summer. If not, I'm always open to offering workshops in communities in and around southwestern BC (or farther afield!) and you can contact me directly to enquire about that.

See you at camp!

New Things on the Horizon!

Exciting news all around these days. Plans are well underway for the 2010 Vancouver Island Fiddle Camp, with a stellar line-up of teachers and a fabulous new location in Cowichan Lake BC. Check out the website (see my links page) for more information. I'm also involved in developing a project with Geoff Horrocks, a great singer and keyboard player based in Ottawa. We will be doing a series of shows on the west coast in March 2010, showcasing Geoff's vocal talents with a great variety of classic ballads and songs. Some samples will be posted here soon, so watch for that. I'm very excited about the possibilities that await us... and I'm so happy to be accompanying a singer again! The fiddle program at the NCM is going strong and we are looking ahead to some exciting new developments - possibly a certificate program! - in fall 2010. Change is in the air. How exciting!

I depart for Yellowknife on December 6, to join Zav RT on a 10-day teaching tour around the Northwest Territories. I'm looking forward to seeing all the fiddlers again and meeting some new ones as well. After Christmas I head north again for the Fort Simpson Jamboree and a teaching tour in the Nahanni Bute region. At this rate, I'll be moving to the north soon (hmmm, not a totally unattractive thought....).

Today was the closing concert for the 2009 Yukon Summer Music Camp, where I have been teaching Suzuki core strings and fiddle for the past week. I have had a glorious time here and am really looking forward to another visit in the future (perhaps February??). Highlights of the week - beyond the privilege of playing music with a great group of children - included a trip to Marsh Lake and a day of gallery hopping. There are some very talented artists here, and next time I will budget more carefully so I can bring some artwork home. Now I'm heading home to see my family again for 2 weeks before the next workshop in mid-August. What a super summer this has been so far!

Greetings from Ottawa, Kansas, where it is hotter than I could have imagined. I'm here for the 35th annual Ottawa Suzuki Strings Institute, completing book 4 training with the wonderful and talented Ann Montzka-Smelser. This is the beginning of a very busy summer... after this I will be teaching in the Northwest Territories, on Saltspring Island, in the Yukon and on Orcas Island. I'm looking forward to meeting and working with a lot of fantastic musicians young and old, and learning a whole lot in the process!
